Microlensing by Stars in the Disk of M31

چکیده

The optical depth to microlensing toward M31 due to known stars in the disk of M31 itself is τ ∼ 2 × 10 −7 e −r/d where d is the disk scale length and r is the distance along the major axis. Thus, there can be significant lensing toward the M31 disk even if M31 contains no dark compact objects. The optical depth has a strong dependence on azimuthal angle: at fixed radius τ ∝ [1 + (h/d) tan i cos φ] −2 where h is the scale height of the disk, i = 75 • is the inclination of M31, and φ is the azimuthal angle relative to the near minor axis. By measuring the optical depth as a function of radial and azimuthal position, it is possible to estimate h and d for the mass of the M31 disk, and so determine whether the disk light traces disk mass. Ground-based observations in 0. ′′ 5 seeing of 0.8 deg 2 once per week could yield ∼ 3 events per year. With an ambitious space-based project, it would be possible to to observe ∼ 80 events per year. If lensing events were dominated by the M31 spheroid rather than the disk, the event rate would be higher and the spheroid's parameters could be measured. The pattern of optical depths differs substantially for a disk and a spheroid.

The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations

Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...

Variable stars in M31 from the MEGA survey

The MEGA microlensing survey is introduced and several topics about variable stars in M31 are discussed. An adopted model population of semiregular (SR) variable stars is presented, and the efficiency to recover these stars in M31 in a specific example MEGA dataset is predicted. The period-flux amplitude relation of the SRs discovered by MEGA could be used to measure the inclination of the M31 ...

First microlensing candidate towards M31 from Nainital Microlensing Survey

We report our first microlensing candidate NMS-E1 towards M31 from the data accumulated during four years long Nainital Microlensing Survey. Cousin R and I band observations of ∼ 13 ′ × 13 ′ field in the direction of M31 were carried out since 1998 and data is analysed using pixel technique proposed by the AGAPE collaboration. The NMS-E1 lies in the disk of M31 at α = 04333.3 and δ = +41◦06 ′ 4...

Results from a Survey of Gravitational Microlensing towards M31

We describe the results of a search for microlensing events affecting stars in the outer bulge and inner disk of M31, due both to masses in M31 and the Galaxy. These observations, from 1994 and 1995 on the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope and KPNO 4m, are sufficient to rule out masses in the range of ∼ 0.003 M⊙ to 0.08 M⊙ as the primary consistuents of the mass of M31 towards this field. F...
